Table 4 Protocol for a rescue procedure after starting the transfer procedure

From: Simulation-based development: shaping clinical procedures for extra-uterine life support technology

1

As soon as the perinate is exposed to air/as soon as the umbilical cord is cut, a timer is set.

2

The (now) newborn is placed onto the workstation and immediately wrapped in an isolation bag and fitted with a cap. The isolation bag will only be removed from the incubator once the newborn has arrived at the neonatal intensive care unit.

3

Breathing and circulation are observed. Necessary interventions are done according to “Airway, Breathing, Circulation” and neonatal resuscitation protocols [74] (NVK and NRR).

4

A hole in the isolation bag allows the hand of the newborn to be pulled through so that it can receive an intravenous drip.

5

Pulse/oximeter is attached to the right hand/arm of the newborn for measurement of preductal values. The device is only turned on after it has been attached to the newborn.

6

The newborn is placed into the transport incubator.

7

Parents are shortly informed of the situation of the newborn and if its condition allows it, parents can briefly see their child.

8

The newborn is brought to the neonatal intensive care unit.
